Sacramento's new soccer team, Sacramento Republic FC, and Cal Expo are a step closer to having a new full-sized soccer field.
Crews are clearing the area near the Bill Graham Presents Amphitheater for a new soccer field and grandstands.
Rick Pickering is head of Cal Expo and the State Fair. He says the new field will have many uses.
"Ideally, we'd like to show the soccer off but there's a big interest in Rugby and in cricket and other field-type events that could potentially take place on the grass," says Pickering.
Sacramento Republic FC Team President Warren Smith concurs.
"I'm on the board of directors for the Sacramento Convention and Visitor's Bureau which oversees the Sports Commission and they're already talking about other events. You know, we're looking at rugby, lacrosse and others. And obviously having a field this size allows for such."
Ovations Food Service and Sacramento Republic FC are paying for the field and stadium.
The stadium will have lights and removable bleachers that will seat 8,000 people.
Sacramento Republic FC had planned to play at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium. But, Major League Soccer told the club the size of the playing surface was too small.
Sacramento Republic FC plans to play at Cal Expo for five years.
The team has not decided where its permanent home will be.
