CapRadio Wins Two 2020 Excellence in Journalism Awards

Sacramento, CA - February 4, 2021: The Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California chapter, announced that Capital Public Radio (CapRadio) is the recipient of a 2020 Excellence in Journalism Award for Breaking News, and is part of a statewide collaboration that won for Public Service. The Excellence in Journalism Awards recognize extraordinary contributions in news over the past year.

The CapRadio reporting team of Sarah Mizes-Tan, Scott Rodd, Sammy Caiola, Nicole Nixon, Emily Zentner, Ezra David Romero, Kris Vera-Phillips and Andrew Nixon were honored with the Breaking News Award for their coverage of the George Floyd demonstrations for racial justice in Sacramento.

During the demonstrations, CapRadio’s journalists literally worked day-and-night to witness and report back on the landmark moment occurring in Sacramento, capturing the events in real-time through photos, video and updates. CapRadio’s coverage also told the stories of demonstrators to hear why they chose to march and what the moment meant to them.

"The breaking news was nonstop in 2020, so it's a huge honor to be recognized for our journalism in that area,” said Nick Miller, managing editor of news at CapRadio. “This award involves nearly the entire staff, and that makes me even more proud. Last summer's racial justice demonstrations were historic, and we're grateful to have served our communities during that time."

CapRadio was also part of a statewide collaboration honored with the Public Service Award for the reporting series Unsealed: California’s Secret Police Misconduct and Use-of-Force Files. The news coalition investigated long-hidden information on police misconduct, publishing over 100 stories that uncovered abuses of power, false arrests and officers fired for misconduct only to be rehired by other agencies.

“We are thrilled to receive these awards for excellence in journalism from a highly respected organization,” said Joe Barr, chief content officer at CapRadio. “These awards reflect our commitment to being an essential local news source covering the major events and issues across our region.”
