Sacramento, Calif. - July 28, 2016: Capital Public Radio is excited to welcome Kevin Doherty as the new morning host on CapRadio 88.9 FM Sacramento, 91.7 Groveland/Sonora, and 88.7 Sutter/Yuba City.  With a deep knowledge of classical music, experience as a professional opera performer, and an engaging on-air style, Doherty is sure to become a favorite with CapRadio listeners, just as he was at his previous station, WUOT in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"I am thrilled to be joining the team at Capital Public Radio," exclaimed Doherty.  "I have always had a desire to make classical music more accessible in the cities in which I have lived and with CapRadio and Sacramento, I believe I have found the perfect partners."

A native New Yorker, Doherty received his bachelor's degree in music from Ithaca College. He has sung in front of hundreds of thousands of people during his nearly two decades as a professional opera performer.  Doherty discovered his passion for radio as host and producer of the weekend show Early Morning Concert on WUOT.

"Kevin's extensive musical background is a huge plus," said CapRadio's managing editor for music Paul Conley. "But what distinguished him most among the candidates in our national search was his authenticity. Kevin has none of that aloof, elitist tone that used to be common on classical radio. He wants to connect with listeners and with the community in a very real way."

Doherty believes classical music is vital in this day and age of technology and instant gratification. "It encourages us to quiet our minds and listen. It inspires fellowship, creativity, and thoughtfulness. The music can also be incredibly energetic and motivational," said Doherty.

Starting August 1, Doherty will deliver CapRadio's distinctive and refreshing mix of classical music weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m. along with interesting facts and anecdotes about the music and its makers.  He joins an experienced weekday lineup that includes fellow music hosts Cale Wiggins, Donna Apidone, Gary Vercelli, Victor Forman and Dennis Newhall.
