Sacramento, Calif – May 6, 2014: What does it take to keep a loved one alive? Nearly one in three Americans provides care to someone who is ill, disabled or aged including parents, spouses, siblings and children with disabilities. It’s a labor of love that takes a toll physically, emotionally and financially. Who cares for the caregivers? How do they care for themselves? These questions are explored in “Who Cares,” the latest episode of Capital Public Radio’s multimedia documentary series, The View from Here.

Four California caregivers share their stories about the challenges they face, the stresses they endure and the power of family and faith. James and Judy Lee take care of their son Justin who was born with cerebral palsy. Now 15, Justin requires round-the-clock care. Loretta Jackson cares for her sister, Shirlene, who suffered a stroke and is unable to walk or talk. She also cares for her dad, Theodis, who was diagnosed with dementia two years ago. Rick Rayburn says his wife Marianne was a beloved schoolteacher, but younger-onset dementia and a severe reaction to medication has left her unable to walk.

“These caregivers allowed our reporters into t heir lives over months to truly understand their experiences. What emerges in the program is both heart wrenching and inspirational,” says Joe Barr Director of News and Information for Capital Public Radio.

The View From Here: Who Cares airs Friday, May 9 at 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Capital Public Radio’s news stations.
