Off Air - 111 - In Studio - ALAK

'LAK ing Nothing

Punk, Country, Lucid Dreaming, and emerging from the Freak-Folk Pigeonhole

ALAK - 03With a sound almost impossible to pin down, genre purists could have debates to rival Lincoln and Douglas regarding how ALAK's records should be cataloged. It doesn't take more than a few bars to be immersed in the poetic, moody atmosphere Jocelyn Noir presents as ALAK.

At once overwhelming and inviting Noir jumps skillfully between styles almost daring those genre debates to begin in earnest.  Even her album's titles demand your full attention.  Not since Sparklehorse's Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot have I seen an album moniker as grand as ALAK's"Clarinettis Qoonotations: Too Many Notes" fucking preternatural and the golden weave of g-nashing teeth.

ALAK - 07On tour with husband/last week's in-studio guest, PREGNANT, Noir will be on the road this summer with The Tradition Tour. Funded via Kickstarter donations Jocelyn and Daniel will take their infant daughter across the country (with a few U.K. dates possible) making their mark at venues and certain landmarks along the way.

If you're encouraged to kick in a few bucks you may do so here.

True, in this week's Off Air you get a stripped down side of ALAK but no less potent or as the band's website puts it "surreal but accessible … dream imagery … and the mysteries of all things natural."

Whatever you do, don't call it "freak folk."

New Buffalo Tom Single

Brand new Boston College Rock

Buffalo Tom - SkinsFrom their debut in 1989 Buffalo Tom have been a AAA radio station cream dream. Easy on the ears but insightful enough not fall into Maroon 5 territory the Boston-based rock trio have been a staple of The Good Fight for years.

I just didn't know they were still taking the hill 20 years later.

is their latest album; due out this Tuesday. "Down" is the band's first single:

The 6th will be one year since Mark Linkous, the man behind the band Sparklehorse, took his life. I invite newcomers and old fans alike to remember Mark's music through Off Air's retrospective from last March.
