Homeless Shelter/Valley Air Quality/Alcatraz/Houston Jones

Homeless Shelter Closes Sacramento's homeless shelter at Cal Expo finally closed this morning - it's usually only open in the winter. It stayed open later than usual as part of a deal to close Sacramento's so-called tent city. What happens to the people who were staying at Cal Expo?

Valley Air Quality The recent hot weather has had the almost inevitable effect of worsening the Central Valley's air quality. How much worse is it? What's the air quality trend? And what can be done to improve it?

Alcatraz The world's most famous prison opened 75 years ago today. Alcatraz was built to house the nation's most notorious and incorrigible criminals, but as tough as life there was, a lot of mythology about Alcatraz emerged, and real life on The Rock was not always what the general public thought it was. An exhaustively researched study about Alcatraz has now yielded a book that answers questions and debunks myths. It's called "Alcatraz: The Gangster Years" and we'll talk with the two co-authors.

Houston Jones The San Francisco-based Americana quintet Houston Jones is coming back to our area. They're at Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne and the Woodland Opera House next week. The band stopped by our studio last September and talked with Insight guest host David Watts Barton. This segment originally aired Sept. 18th, 2008.
