David Houston and the Strings/ In the Flow Festival

David Houston and the Strings It's a big weekend, musically, in Sacramento. The Sammies - the Sacramento Area Music Awards - are being awarded. There's also a festival of jazz and improvised music and other concerts. Today on Insight, we'll talk with Sammies-nominated artists. One of them is jazz guitartist Ross Hammond, who's also one of the producers of the jazz festival. We start with the Sammies-nominated godfather of much of Sacramento's music scene - David Houston. As a producer, he's worked with many of the city's top names over the years, including Jackie Greene. As a musician, he's been a prominent figure in Sacramento's music scene since the late '60s. Houston and the Strings came by the studios earlier this week and played a couple songs.

David Houston and the Strings perform with Sal Valentino and The Half Measures at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 27th at Luna's Cafe, 1414 16th St., Sacramento. Information: (916) 441-3931.

In the Flow Festival A variety of jazz and improvisational musicians will be performing at multiple venues on Broadway in Sacramento as part of the second annual In the Flow Festival. One of the bands playing at the festival includes it's producers, Ross Hammond and Byron Blackburn. They stopped by our studio earlier this week to play and talk about improvised music. They call themselves The RACE Collective.

The In the Flow Festival runs from today through Sunday, June 28th at multiple venues along Broadway in Sacramento.
