And the Budget Goes On/ 'The Vagrants'/ Mumbo Gumbo

And the Budget Goes On The deadline for the legislature passing California's state budget has come and gone again. Today on Insight, Capitol Bureau Chief Marianne Russ tells what's happening with the never-ending budget process. Lawmakers are considering a Democratic plan to fix the state's $24 billion deficit, but with no apparent support from Republican lawmakers or Governor Schwarzenegger, the vote is probably just a formality. The next fiscal year starts next Wednesday. What's the likelihood of a budget getting passed soon? And what will happen if it doesn't?

'The Vagrants' It's a rare thing when a writer gets great reviews internationally for her first novel. But that happened to Yiyun Li, a Chinese-born woman who's an assistant professor of English at UC Davis. Li's first novel, "The Vagrants," was published this year and has been favorably reviewed by top publications on both sides of the Atlantic.
