Save German/ Future of News/ "Broadcast Blues"

Save German A local student is campaigning to keep the German language taught in her high school, but how necessary is language learning today when you're an English speaker in a world where English is the dominant language and where your computer can translate something in an instant? Today on Insight, we'll talk about this issue with the student striving to save her program, a language teacher and a professor who's an expert in foreign language learning.

Future of News These are challenging times for the newspaper industry. Circulations and revenues are falling, many newspaper companies are laying off large numbers of staff, some papers are shutting down and some are moving strictly online. As we continue our discussion from Monday's show, where is all of this heading and what impact will it have on society?

"Broadcast Blues" A new film by a local producer makes the case that the news media is harming democracy. You'll meet Sue Wilson, who's had a long career in public and commercial broadcasting, including working at Capital Public Radio, and hear why she made "Broadcast Blues."

"Broadcast Blues" will be screened at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 22nd at the Crest Theatre, 1013 K St., Sacramento. Information: (916) 442-5189.

Starting Monday, March 23rd, Insight moves to a new time. You'll hear us right after Fresh Air at 10 a.m.
