Tonight Capital Public Radio will debut a new feature as part of its nightly Excellence In Jazz programming. “Sittin’ In with Gary Vercelli” will spotlight the programming choices of movers and shakers in the community who also happen to be big jazz fans.
“The 90 minute program will feature members of our community, selecting music for the program and explaining to our listeners why they think the music is air-worthy,” says Jazz Music Director Gary Vercelli. This first installment of what Vercelli hopes to make a quarterly offering features Capital Public Radio board member Jose Hermocillo and focuses on the major innovators of the jazz trumpet.
Hermocillo, who plays trumpet and has an incredible jazz collection, is senior vice president and managing director of APCO Worldwide’s Sacramento office. He is one of California’s leading public affairs practitioners specializing in legislative and regulatory matters. Jose was recently named one of Sacramento Magazine’s “100 Most Powerful and Influential” people in the Sacramento region.
Hermocillo’s programming celebrates masters of the modern jazz trumpet, including recordings led by Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard. The second segment of the program is comprised of music composed and performed by trumpet artists from continents other than North America, including Italy’s Enrico Rava, Russian-born Valery Ponomarev, and Cuban-great Arturo Sandoval.
