Spokeswoman Alane Masui says the damage turned out to be more extensive than initially thought.
Masui: “We take this incident very seriously. And this service disruption has affected our passengers. And we want to prevent this from happening in the future. We have video surveillance where we can possibly examine what took place and take precautions to prevent that in the future.”
Masui says the copper cable helps provide power to the light rail tracks. Officials first thought the cable was only stolen from one intersection – but later realized it was also taken from another one nearby.
RT officials first discovered something was wrong shortly before 6am Thursday. They restored service just before 6pm.
