Unemployment Dips Statewide, Unchanged Locally

Those numbers were released Friday by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. California was among three-dozen states that saw unemployment rates fall last month. But it’s still among the worst-off states for jobs.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for the four-county Sacramento area in November held steady…at 12.4%.

Justin Wehner is with the state Employment Development Department. He says the region grew jobs last month as businesses got ready for the holidays.

“…with all of that gain in the retail sector – which was up 2,100 jobs. However, it is important to note that that 2,100 job increase in the retail sector is actually below the average 3,100 job increase from October to November over the last 19 years.”

Other sectors that saw job gains were utilities, local government and health services. But those gains were offset by big losses in construction and agriculture
