According to a report by the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group, tap water in many metropolitan areas is fouled by a “cocktail of chemical contaminants.” It found that Reno’s drinking water was the fifth worst based on analysis of 20 million quality tests performed by utilities over the past five years. Paul Miller is water quality chief for the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. He says the report is misleading.
I don’t think that this is really a scientific study. I think that one it was just a spot check on different utilities and what I saw from the limited views is that some of the ones that finished first and some of the ones that finished at the end of 100 utilities, there wasn’t much separating them.
Miller says Reno’s water is far cleaner than EPA standards require – and among the best drinking water in the nation. But the report’s authors say the EPA needs to establish tougher safety standards.
The report also says the City of Sacramento’s drinking water is at the other end of the spectrum – it ranks first among California’s major cities.
