Right now, only pedestrians are allowed on the mall. But Tuesday night, City Council members changed that. They approved a measure allowing cyclists back on the stretch between the Convention Center and Old Sacramento.
Councilman Steve Cohn says…it’s about time.
“To me this is one of those rules that was really antiquated and it’s high time we changed it. If you want people to try alternative modes you got to make it a little more convenient for people.”
City staff says letting bikes onto the mall will also help improve business at shops and restaurants.
Under the ordinance, cyclists will have to yield to pedestrians, stay off the sidewalks and stick to a 10-mile-an-hour speed limit. It’s expected to go into effect early next year.
The city is also looking at whether to allow cars back onto K Street. A report from an outside consulting firm is due by the end of the year.
