Steven Szalay will come on board December 1st as a special advisor. He’ll take over as the county’s top administrator when Schutten leaves at the end of the month.
Szalay formerly held the same post at Alameda County. He’s also led two statewide advocacy groups: the California State Association of Counties and California State Sheriffs Association.
He’ll stay with the county until June or until the Board of Supervisors approves a permanent replacement for Schutten … whichever comes first. The financially struggling county will pay Szalay nearly $25,000 a month in salary and benefits.
Meanwhile, Yolo County named its new chief executive late last week. Elk Grove Assistant City Manager Patrick Blacklock will join the county in early January.
