Maldonado is a Central Coast farmer and a moderate Republican who’s been an ally of the Governor's. He’s also run unsuccessfully for State Controller. Earlier this year Maldonado helped Schwarzenegger and Democrats push through a budget that included tax increases – an unpopular move with his own party. The Lieutenant Governor’s post is open because John Garamendi left the position after being elected to Congress earlier this month. In a statement, Schwarzenegger said that Maldonado has proven he has the strength and courage to “reach across the partisan divide.” He called the Republican “absolutely the most qualified person to take on the role of Lieutenant Governor.”  In the same statement, Maldonado said
he was honored to take the position on. Lawmakers have 90 days to confirm or reject Maldonado’s appointment.
