The Qoba Foundation is one of five properties that were part of Thursday’s federal action. Mosques in New York City, Houston and Maryland and a Manhattan skyscraper were also involved.
Imam Azeez is the spiritual leader of another Sacramento area mosque, the SALAM Islamic Center. He says with the nation already on edge after last week's shootings at Fort Hood, Thursday’s action comes at a bad time.
Azeez: “We’re all Muslims and these are our brothers. Many of them come to our mosque, and some of our people go there. So it is just another section of our community, and we’re extremely concerned, extremely worried about those congregants when they go to their mosque tomorrow and find that red tape.”
The property seizures are part of an investigation into a Muslim foundation suspected of being under Iranian government control. Prosecutors say the foundation has been helping to illegally funnel money back to the Iranian government.
