Sacramento County Public Health Officer, Dr. Glennah Trochet, recommended calling a state of emergency because of an uptick in hospitalizations from the H1N1 virus and increased strain on the health system. Trochet says the declaration will help get more volunteers in place at flu clinics, boost the number of protective masks for health care workers and give hospitals the option to add more patient beds. According to the Sacramento County Health Department more than 300 people have been hospitalized with swine flu and 15 have died since April. The local declaration follows statewide and national emergency declarations.
