There are no statewide issues on the ballot – but the race for the tenth Congressional district could have a big impact on state politics.
The two major party candidates are Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi – a Democrat – who’s battling Republican businessman David Harmer. The seat was vacated when Ellen Tauscher left to take a position with the Obama Administration. Garamendi is considered the front-runner and if he wins, Governor Schwarzenegger will have the job of appointing a replacement for Lieutenant Governor.  There are a variety of other issues on ballots around the state, including local parcel taxes to help fund schools, sales tax increases to fund public safety and hotel tax increases.   And in San Francisco, voters will decide whether the city should be able to sell the naming rights for Candlestick park, where the 49-ers play.
