It’s an anti-terrorism awareness program called “First Observer” … and it’s geared towards truckers, school bus drivers and mass transit workers. Master trainer Jeff Beatty (BEE-tee) with the Department of Homeland Security says the goal is to teach transportation workers to recognize terrorist casing techniques. For example …
Beatty: “If you see somebody taking the picture of an underside of a bridge, that’s not a normal picture that a tourist would take. That’s kind of a suspicious activity.” (0:09)
Some three million large trucks travel on U-S highways every day. Anti-terrorism officials want drivers and other transportation workers to keep their eyes open – and report anything that looks unusual. Then, analysts will piece together the reports and look for trends or dangers.
The training is at the Western Truck School in West Sacramento.
Of course, you don’t have to be a truck driver to report something suspicious. You can call 1-888-217-5902 or click the link at the right of the page.
