Valimet Incorporated makes aluminum powder…which aerospace companies can use as fuel in solid rocket boosters.
Russ Frazier is with the EPA. He says they discovered the discrepancy during a routine inspection. Frazier says the main goal of the regulation is to keep nearby fire departments aware of possible chemical hazards.
“…the second goal is to provide information to a community at large so that the community is aware of the chemicals. And if a facility that is required to report does not report then that information is (considered) withheld.”
Exposure to high levels of aluminum dust can lead to lung problems. Under the right conditions, aluminum dust is also explosive and flammable.
Valimet declined our request to comment on the fine.
