A sergeant from Placer County and a private from Reno were among eight Americans killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.
The Pentagon released the soldiers’ names Wednesday. They include 24-year-old Joshua Hardt of Applegate, near Auburn, and 22-year-old Kevin Thomson of Reno.
Lieutenant Colonel Steve Wollman is a spokesman for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, where the soldiers were based. He says they died from wounds suffered from small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.
Wolman: “These soldiers were killed in action repelling a well-organized enemy attack on their combat outpost in Eastern Afghanistan on the 3rd of October. Their heroic actions and selfless service undoubtedly saved the lives of many of their comrades.”
Hardt served one tour of duty in Iraq and was on his first in Afghanistan. Thomson was on his first deployment in the army. Both received a bronze star and a purple heart.
