Prison officials say about 120 inmates began fist-fighting and hitting each other with food trays in a dining hall at about 7:30 Wednesday morning.

Lieutenant Anthony Gentile is a prison spokesman. He says it’s still not clear what caused the fight.

“It was various races. At this point in time we don’t know if race was a factor. Sometimes it just takes one dirty look or one off the cuff comment to set things off. It just depends on the different factions that are involved.”

None of the injuries are life-threatening, although the inmates were sent to area hospitals.

Gentile says guards used pepper spray to end the brawl within 15 minutes.

The medium-security prison is about 20 miles east of Sacramento and holds about four-thousand inmates.
