Officials say Gibson Ranch will be closed to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting October 5th -- and it could close entirely, depending on how the Board of Supervisors votes next week.
The current plan is to keep the park near Rio Linda and Elverta open from Thursdays through Sundays. Officials hope that will maximize revenues, from picnic reservations to visits to the equestrian center.
But the county faces a $76 million budget deficit. Supervisors voted to lay off more than 300 employees this week -- and they’re weighing even more layoffs to sheriff’s deputies and Child Protective Services workers.
The county has already cut back on maintenance throughout its park system. And the American River Parkway has taken some cuts too, including closing some entrances to vehicles.
