Scott Gediman is a park ranger.

“There’s certainly some smoke along the road, but overall air quality has been good, visibility has been good and the park is open.”

The fire is burning in a steep and rugged area near the community of El Portal. Gediman says it started as a prescribed, or planned burn.

“However the fire left the prescription line so we will be investigating why it happened. But we light these prescribed burns and they basically regenerate the soil and allow some of the dead trees to be moved away.”

So far, more than 5,000 acres have burned. The fire is 55% contained. But officials estimate the fire won't be fully contained before September 10th.
