The City Council Tuesday night extended the 45-day moratorium by another ten-and-a-half months. City spokeswoman Wendy Klock-Johnson says staff needs more time.

“Forty-five days was not enough time to do all the public outreach. So we can go out and take the temperature of the community and then go back and have a sound report to present to council.

Ryan Landers is with the medical marijuana advocacy group Compassionate Coalition. Landers says he’s glad the city isn’t rushing the issue.

“Don’t just slap an ordinance out because you’re under the gun. Get a real law out there that works. Unless they actually take the time to do that, we’ll be back at the drawing table every other week.”

City officials say the number of dispensaries is on the rise...with an estimated two-dozen currently within city limits. Some cities, like Davis and Folsom, have banned medical marijuana dispensaries entirely.
