The Potter Valley Community Health Center will close on August 21. Cathy Frey represents rural community clinics in the Mendocino area. She says last month the centers started picking up the tab for Medi-Cal patients’ dental care because California cut the benefit. And last week Governor Schwarzenegger eliminated community clinic grants. Frey says this was too much for the Potter Valley clinic.
Frey: “They’re losing about a third of their revenue.”
Frey says now people will have to go to clinics at least thirty minutes away.
“There are a lot of people in Potter Valley who don’t have transportation, and we don’t have bus services out here in Mendocino County, so it’s going to be challenging for them to even get medical care.”
Several other community clinics including some in Southern California may also close soon.
