The Sacramento Police Department is getting its second boost this week from the federal economic stimulus program. The Justice Department says it’s sending the city $2.5 million in grants to upgrade police equipment.

Sergeant Norm Leong says the money will bolster the department’s IT infrastructure.
Leong: “In other words, our computer systems and equipment that goes to our computers in our vehicles – as well as our in car camera systems are outdated.”
The grants will also help complete the department’s shooting range and upgrade officers’ “conductive energy devices” – or as they’re usually called, Tasers.
But even though the funds come from the economic stimulus, Leong says this particular grant won’t save or create any new jobs within the police department.
On Tuesday, the Justice Department awarded the city nearly $10 million to hire 35 new police officers.
