Aerojet has been cleaning up rocket fuel chemicals that leaked into the groundwater...including treating and discharging about 40,000 acre feet of groundwater every year.

Herb Niederberger is division chief of the Sacramento County Department of Water Resources. He says the cleanup is taking a toll.

“The damages with associated with the extraction of 40,000 acre feet a year, the damages associated with the loss of our groundwater supply – we’ve yet to receive any recovery for that. And that’s what this lawsuit is about.”

Damages could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Aerojet officials declined to be interviewed for this story but issued the following statement:

Aerojet has continued to negotiate in good faith to resolve the County’s demands. We are disappointed that the County has taken this step.
