Modesto has raised the maximum fine for using illegal fireworks to one thousand dollars.

The Modesto police department, fire department and the Sheriff’s department say they’ve invoked a zero tolerance policy and they say violators will be cited.

Modesto Division Fire Chief Mike Payton says legal fireworks display a logo from the state fire marshal’s office.

"If you see the state fire marshal seal and it doesn’t explode of fly, then it is probably considered safe and sane and okay to use."

Law enforcement agencies recommend that the public buy from authorized roadside vendors that represent non-profit organizations. Buyers should be wary of fireworks sold by someone operating out of the trunk of their car.
