Backers of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson have turned in signatures to send a measure increasing the mayor’s powers before voters.
Friday, June 26, 2009
It would change Sacramento’s system of government to make the mayor the city’s chief executive. Currently, City Manager Ray Kerridge is responsible for Sacramento’s day-to-day operations.
Johnson has said the measure would give him more responsibility and more accountability.
But several council members have said the measure goes too far – and doesn’t leave enough checks and balances to rein the mayor in.
Once the signatures are verified, the council will decide whether to accept the measure as law or place it on the ballot. The earliest it could go before voters is June of 2010.
