The school board adopted a new budget with nearly $30 million in state mandated cuts Tuesday night. The cuts include eliminating music programs for fifth and sixth graders.

Sue Kenmotsu is president of the Lodi teacher’s union.

“Teachers are clearly not the only category of people who are losing jobs but it is heartbreaking when you realize that teachers who are very eager to start the next year realize that they are not going to have jobs.”

But Kenmotsu says her group understands the district's position in making the cuts and called the budget "as generous as it can be."

Meanwhile, school librarians who faced layoffs will keep their jobs thanks to federal stimulus funding.
