The proposed site of the senior community is in the northern part of the city…in the same spot where a housing development called Covell Village was planned. Voters rejected that development back in 2004.
Opponents of the new plan like Davis resident Linda Burley say it would create too much traffic and pollution.
“It is Covell Village – the developers re-circulating it again hoping that using senior citizens as an issue will get it through. We voted this down before and I do not want to see this kind of development.”
But supporters like Donna Lott say there’s a need for alternative housing for seniors in Davis.
“A lot of people who were relying on income from their 401Ks have less money. If there were a senior-related housing development it would be something they could transfer their current equity to.”
Davis City Council members have directed city staff to survey public opinion on the issue …and research whether or not there’s a need for more senior housing.
