The stretch of I-80 between the Bocca Reservoir and the Nevada border won’t be much fun to drive across for the next few years. But Rochelle Jenkins with CalTrans says the project is long overdue.
"There was a lot of bridge retrofitting going on last year. This year it’s reconstruction. It’s going beyond just a repaving. We are reconstructing Interstate 80. She is 45 years old. Originally it was constructed to help support the 1960 Olympics."
Jenkins says there are no easy alternate routes along the Truckee River Canyon, so motorists should allow plenty of extra travel time until the job is done. However, Caltrans has set up a website – GetAcross80.com --with work schedules and video cameras to drivers can use to help plan their trips.
The project is scheduled to continue through 2011.
