Presidential candidates and their wives have made stops in Merced, but when Michelle Obama arrives to address the graduating class at UC Merced, it will be the first time, at least within memory, that an incumbent First Lady has visited the city.

Merced spokesman, Mike Conway says the President’s wife is expected to be a big draw.

“UC estimates about twenty-five thousand people will be coming to Merced just because the first lady is here.”

Not all of the 25 thousand can be accommodated on the campus, so the city is hosting a Cap and Town festival in the downtown area. Large screen televisions are going to be set up so that those in town can watch the commencement live.

The event will include plenty of entertainment and food.
