Los Rios Community College District wants to help the economy – and save some money. The four-campus college system will fast-track $114 million in construction projects, from an almost $17 million building for the architecture/construction management program at Cosumnes River College to a $33 million parking garage at American River College. Other projects include athletic fields at Folsom Lake College for almost $20 million to $13 million for improving Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College.
Los Rios officials say fast-tracking the half-dozen projects is about helping the economy and creating about 1,025 jobs. Construction on the largely bond-funded projects was scheduled to start between 2011 and 2013, but will now start as soon as next year. In addition to creating jobs, the fast-growing district will cut its costs by 10 percent to 30 percent by starting the projects during the recession. Los Rios district has about 88,000 students, 8,000 more than a year ago. This is Ron Trujillo for the Sacramento Business Journal.
