It’s the number for Underground Service Alert – a free hotline to get information on what utility lines may exist beneath the area you’re working in.
Pacific Gas and Electric’s Brian Swanson says…you never know what lies beneath you.
“The depth of different utility lines underground can vary from just a couple of feet to several feet so you don’t want to assume that utility lines are buried deep underground and you’re not going to damage them when you’re planting a tree. So the common rule is before any digging project you want to call 811 first.”
Swanson says damaging utility lines can disrupt gas and electric service to an entire neighborhood, cause property damage or could lead to serious injury.
