Sac PD stats show a 60 percent increase in burglaries over the last two months in the Meadowview – Mack Road – Valley Hi area, in southern Sacramento. That’s compared to February and March of last year. Police spokesman Norm Leong says not only have the suspects frequently been juveniles, they often look familiar.
Leong: “Our detectives are working very hard to make these arrests, and sometimes these burglars are people they know are burglars that have been arrested for burglary in the past that are repeat offenders. And it gets frustrating to arrest the same people and not have an end to it and know it’s a continuing cycle.”
In fact, Leong says, with the county’s juvenile hall at capacity, the lack of punishment could be a reason for the increase in burglaries. Police are asking residents to keep an eye out; most of the recent arrests have come from neighbors calling in tips. Most of the burglaries have taken place during the day, when no one’s at home.
