Even though the store’s been empty since Tower went out of business two years ago, the sign was never removed. But now a new business is opening at the site.

As for the sign’s fate…it’s being donated to the Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center. Carson Hendricks with the archives says it’s a vibrant piece of local history.

“Red lettering with a yellow background and then there’s like blue concentric circles that actually kind of run like a target and hopefully in the near future we’ll be able to get it restored and at some point put it on display.”

Tower Records founder Russ Solomon opened the Watt Avenue store back in 1960. He’s expected to be on hand when the sign comes down next Thursday.
