Here’s what documents from the California Department of Public Health show. At the Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego County a patient died after not receiving needed medication. Two Ventura County hospitals left sponges in patients after surgery. A Marin County hospital made the same mistake.

At a Humboldt County hospital a child was given too much radiation during an x-ray increasing the risk of cancer.

Kathleen Billingsley with the Department of Public Health says consumers should be aware of the citations.

“The more information that we provide to consumers the better informed they will be in terms of how they approach the health care delivery system.”
Three Orange County hospitals were fined too – those violations involved medication errors, physical assault and improper food preparation. All of these penalties carry a $25,000 fine.
