District officials say the salary reduction would save just over a-Million dollars. Bruce Colby – the district’s chief business officer – says it would also help save jobs. But Colby says time is running out.
“For an employee reduction in salary to mitigate layoff notices, we would have to have an agreement with them in the next two weeks.”
Colby says the district needs to cut salaries to deal with an eight-percent reduction in state revenue. Cathy Haskell is a math teacher at Emerson Junior High…and president of the Davis Teacher’s Association. She says the prospect of a pay cut is disheartening.
“It’s hard to go to work everyday when they’re talking about next year you’ll have five less days to teach or you just wouldn’t get paid for five of those days. They’re not good choices.”
The salary cut proposal will be presented at a district meeting Wednesday at 4 PM in the Brunelle Performance Hall at Davis High School.
