Sutter Health will close its money-losing dialysis centers in Sacramento. It’s a decision that will affect about 160 patients and about 45 employees.

Closing the two centers – located on Alhambra Boulevard and South Land Park Drive in Sacramento – will save Sutter between $500,000 and $1 million a year. The Sacramento-based health system has been trying to sell the dialysis centers for the past two years, but could not find a buyer. Sutter started planning for the shutdown of the centers in November, and notified employees and patients several days ago. National chains – such as DaVita Inc. – have entered the region, creating more competition for patients and hurting the bottom line for Sutter’s centers. UC Davis Health System operates a dialysis center, but Catholic Healthcare West and Kaiser Permanente don’t and refer patients to private companies in the region. Sutter has been retraining its dialysis employees for other jobs, and is working to find new centers for patients.
