More than a thousand volunteers are expected to perform public service work this weekend in Sacramento as part of Martin Luther King Day celebrations.

The nation observes Doctor King’s 80th birthday Monday…and Kathy Chow of “Hands on Sacramento” says King was an advocate of “public service as empowerment.”

Chow says anyone can volunteer at over 15 community improvement projects in the Sacramento area Saturday and Monday…

"It’s a great way to not only connect with people but during these hard economic times…one of the things that we notice is that people who’ve been laid off their actually signing up to volunteer…and not only does it lift their spirits during this trying time in their life…but it’s also a great way to build skills…”

On Monday, January 19th, the nation will mark Martin Luther King Junior's 80th Birthday.  Chow says its only fitting that Barack Obama will be sworn-in as president the same week.
