The budget calls for layoffs, employee furloughs, changes to overtime pay and fewer paid holidays for state employees.

Christopher Calhoun is with the Service Employees International Union.

“The governor needs a new New Year’s Resolution. All of these items that he’s proposing related to state workers need to be negotiated at a bargaining table. He can’t just unilaterally come out and say ‘I want to take away this and take away that.’ That’s something that he’s going to have to sit down and talk to folks about.”

Calhoun says California needs new, permanent revenues not more cuts and borrowing. The SEIU represents more than 700,000 workers in California…including social workers, nurses, classroom aids, janitors and college professors.
