For thousands of California families with loved ones in the military…the holidays can be a bittersweet time.
Katie Ferguson is spending Christmas away from her husband for the first time since they got married 16 years ago.
She and her three young daughters will be at home in Elk Grove…while her husband and their father Michael is stationed in Afghanistan.
Michael Ferguson is a fireman in his civilian life here in Sacramento.
But right now he’s a medical aide aboard a Blackhawk helicopter working alongside other California National Guard reservists at Bagram Air Base.
Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley asked Katie how her family will be spending Christmas while Michael is away at war…
Interview runs three minutes 17 seconds

Katie Ferguson lives in Elk Grove.
Her husband Michael is stationed in Afghanistan where he’s serving a year long tour of duty with the California National Guard.
