Johnson's filing an initiative with the city clerk’s office Friday that would change the charter to what’s called a “strong mayor” form of government.
Johnson says it’ll make city government more responsive and more accountable to residents. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and Fresno Mayor Alan Autry appeared with Johnson Friday to praise the initiative.
City manager Ray Kerridge currently runs Sacramento’s day-to-day operations. In a statement, he says the proposal brings up a healthy discussion for a growing city, and that it’s up to voters to decide.
The mayor hopes to send the measure to voters sometime next year.
