“Our kettle drives, our red kettles, we’re actually 20% down on income from what we’ve received last year at this time.”

David Bentley is with the Salvation Army in Sacramento. He says not only is fundraising down, their annual toy drive is slow too. Their goal is to distribute 35,000 toys to needy kids. So far they’ve only collected about 5,000.

“At this point our bins are fairly well empty making it very difficult to begin even the process of bagging toys. If we don’t reach our 10,000 toys this weekend we could be in deep trouble. With the state of the economy we’re just not sure what the response is going to be."

He says they hope to collect about 10,000 more donated toys this Friday and Saturday at their annual toy drive at Cal Expo.
