Peters retired after the 2007 season. He covered the San Francisco Giants for nearly 50 years.
During an appearance on Capital Public Radio’s Insight last year, Peters said he didn’t think he’d actually be inducted.
“I grew up in San Francisco and I wanted to stay around here and I was fortunate enough to be able to find work around here for so many years. But the award goes to people that are more nationally prominent so I don’t have my hopes high but I’m very flattered that they put me up for it.”
Peters also worked for the Oakland Tribune and the Berkeley Daily Gazette.
The Baseball Writers Association of America elected Peters the winner of the JG Taylor Spink award Wednesday. The award goes to one sports writer a year.
