Once again, the City of Sacramento is offering free on-street parking this holiday season. Transportation Department spokeswoman Linda Tucker says it’s the city’s way of helping out local merchants.

“To sort of level the playing field with some of the outlying shopping malls.”

The program kicks off this Saturday and Sunday. So how much money is the city giving up in holiday parking change?

“We have a really rough estimate that in previous years it’s amounted to about $200,000.”

After this weekend, the program resumes beginning Saturday, December 6th through Thursday, December 25th. During this period, on-street, metered parking will be free starting at 4:30 PM weekdays and all day on Saturdays. Parking also won’t cost you anything on Sundays…except in Old Sacramento.
