Eric Nichols is the food service director for Volunteers of America in Sacramento. He says their annual turkey drive has been disappointing...a sign of the weak economy.
“Two years ago we collected 700 turkeys so we had plenty to go around. Last year it was only 380. This year so far we’ve only collected 50 turkeys. I think that is the biggest indicator of what’s going on out there.”
Nichols says people can still drop off donated turkeys and other food this week at the Volunteers of America central kitchen…off of Richards Boulevard in North Sacramento.
Meanwhile, officials with Loaves and Fishes say their donations are off too…by around 20%. Still, the soup kitchen will hold its annual Thanksgiving meal Tuesday starting at 11 AM.
